Greater Cincinnati Community Engagement

Purpose:

Partner with local HRC Board Community Engagement Liaison, HRC field organizing staff, and HRC diversity and inclusion staff in implementing HRC’s external- facing programs to conduct political engagement on issues of importance to the LGBTQ community and broaden HRC’s base of support in diverse communities. This role strengthens relationships with other organizations on issues of mutual concern, partner on HRC’s direct-service activities and public education programs, arrange in-district lobby visits, and engage in other advocacy and electoral programs. Coordinate volunteer recruitment for community engagement activities and ensure that HRC’s local, state, and federal political work is incorporated into all aspects of the steering committee’s programming.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with Board Community Engagement Liaison to develop and implement action plan to meet Community Engagement goals

  • Develop and lead a subcommittee of volunteers to assist in carrying out Community Engagement goals

  • Communicate at least monthly with HRC field and diversity staff to share and receive updates and to provide quarterly results of progress against the steering committee’s community engagement goals

  • Lead efforts to integrate HRC’s community engagement work into all Steering Committee events – membership outreach events, dinners, Pride festivals, monthly socials, Federal Club events, etc.

  • Build coalitions with organizations and leaders representing diverse communities, including statewide

  • LGBTQ political groups, community-based organizations led by people of color and transgender people, civil rights organizations, churches, youth groups and youth-serving organizations, business, media, and labor organizers

  • Lobby members of Congress, as well as state and local lawmakers, on issues of importance to the LGBTQ community, and recruit other volunteers to lobby

  • Coordinate HRC’s involvement in priority political campaigns as directed by national HRC field staff, and in priority diversity and inclusion programs such as Transgender Day of Remembrance, and MLK Day of Service as directed by national HRC diversity and inclusion program staff

  • Draft blog posts about Community Engagement events that highlight key issues

  • Maintain a culture of inclusion through timely and transparent communication; solicitation and sharing of feedback and ideas; and respectfully maintaining clear expectations
